Beads of Bones

When you look at beads made of bone you see a culture cemented in time and replaced with new interpretations. These beads are a symbol of how resourceful tribes in Oklahoma were as well as how their religion played a key role in their daily rituals.

The Native Americans in Oklahoma and many others around the Americans had a deep connection to nature and to their soul. They used materials such as bones and shells to create ornate jewelry and clothing. In this case, the bone beads are most likely made from bird bone because it is a much easier bone to carve due to its perforation. These items worn in the hair and on the body were an extension of the wearers soul and tied them to the "One-Above."

It is crucial to remember, however, that these tribes were decimated by Europeans who entered the Americas, bringing disease and war. There are some tribes who feel strongly that their heritage is not for white Americans to learn and only for natives to hold. If there are tribes who conflict the common practice of education being free to learn, then it is not the place of any other culture to declare otherwise.

These bones, while seemingly morbid to the culture of white Americans, are a memento of cultures that cultivated land to its highest potential and created tools out of brilliant materials. They allow people to see the craftsmanship and dedication of the Native American tribes that inspires appreciation for these cultures. Education on Native tribes is vital in helping them stay protected for years to come so that their culture may flourish without restraint.
